South Sudan’s National Security Service closed the Nation Mirror daily newspaper in Juba today morning without giving any written reasons, an editor for the newspaper said.
Aurelious Simon Chopeee, editor of the Nation Mirror newspaper, confirmed to Radio Tamazuj the closure of the newspaper following instructions by security officials to stop printing.
“They did not tell us the reason, they just said the Nation Mirror was involved in activities that are supposed not to be covered, but we don’t know those activities,” said Chopee.
He pointed out that they were summoned over an opinion peace published by their newspaper, saying the security officials demanded the newspaper’s editors to bring the opinion writer.
The editor added that the newspaper also published The Sentry's report chronicling public corruption among South Sudan's leaders including President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Riek Machar. “We were the only newspaper that published the report, so we think that this could also be one of the problems,“he explained.
