South Sudan’s rival SPLM factions due to sign agreement in Tanzania

Juba, January 21st 2014, South Sudan warring parties are due to sign a reunification agreement in Arusha Tanzania aimed at reuniting Sudan People’s Liberation Movement party.

The Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has said the agreement should be reached so as to disconnect military and politics since majority of SPLM politicians are either military personnel or people who have served in the military.

“Majority of SPLM members are militarized political minded leaders who militarized politics and politicized military at the same time. This is a key reform that we expect to be addressed by the agreement for reunification of SPLM”.

The origin of the violent conflict in South Sudan was due to internal SPLM leadership crisis and if all the members of SPLM are reaching an agreement that will address their internal party leadership competition, then it is healthy for the nation. SPLM leadership crisis has put the country at hostage with lives and properties loss.

In strong terms, CEPO urges the warring parties of South Sudan to sign an agreement that they will honor, several agreements were signed and are violated with closest example being   the cessation of hostilities agreement.
