South Sudan National Parliament ratifies CEDAW

Juba, September 9th 2014, the national parliament of South Sudan has ratified the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) on September 3rd 2014. This marks an effective good footing for women empowerment in South Sudan. It’s a remarkable start in the struggle to protect women human rights.

The greater obstacle to equality and equity among society members is discrimination against women since our society is highly governed by traditional ethics that constitute the societal norms and customs which are mostly in favor of men. While in the modern society, there is serious recognition of women human rights but very slow move is taken to enforce these rights.

The national parliamentarians have fostered the ratification of the Convention on Elimination of Discrimination Against Women, which is impressive in relation to recognition and enforcement of women human rights in South Sudan.

The Executive Director for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) said women Human Rights are violated and abused in the rural set up due to ignorance.

“CEPO is aware through its independent sources that rural women  human rights are much violated due to their ignorance about their rights and freedoms stipulated in the existing laws of the country such as Transitional constitution of South Sudan Part Two Bill of Rights”, Yakani added.

In the urban areas, women rights are recognized faster and enforced slowly because of the absence of instrument such as CEDAW and this ratification will help in quick enforcement.

However, there are other regional charters such as Africa charter for peoples and human rights or Global United Nation charters which South Sudan needs to ratify so as to respect women human rights.

CEPO will disseminatethe convention to the communities to increase their engagement with the parliamentarians on the ratified convention.

The national standing specialized committee of Gender, Child, Social Welfare, Religious Affairs, youth and sports under the leadership of Hon. Alfred WolMathithWol has played a great role in this process and CEPO will be launching its first women empowerment Award of the Year 2014 on December 10th 2014 in Juba to mark the international Human Rights Day.
