#defyhatenow combating social media hate speech and online incitement to violence

Civil society activists in Juba have once again come together to fight back against hatred in a nationwide campaign, designed to promote peace.

An initiative under the title, hash tag defies hate – #defyhatenow mounted last month has been accelerated and the programs director, James Bidal, said the aim is to encourage positive messaging for peace to pave way for unity and development.

“Whatever we are posting should be something positive, something encouraging that can restore peace.” he said.

Bidal said the counter-measure shows that people should be able to tell the story of South Sudan differently.

“Whatever we are posting should be something that is positive, something encouraging that can restore peace and can make us to live in the spirit of oneness and we can prosper so that we can develop this country.”

Speaking to Miraya Breakfast show, Bidal warned that any attempt to embark on spreading messages of hate, would escalate the scale of violence and would retard prosperity.
