Facebook Stands to fight fake news

 

Juba, April 28th 2017, Executives of Facebook   have affirmed that they will make an an exertion to combat fake news   that is being circulated in the platform and they will ensure that    freedom of expression online is not abused by users of the platform.

The Executive Director for Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) Mr. Edmund Yakani said majority of Facebook users across the globe and South Sudanese in particular are abusing the social media platform   and CEPO takes a pro-active role in researching   the social media landscape and Facebook decision to fight fake news came prior the release of CEPO next report on “Social Media between peace and violence”  

“Facebook decision to fight fake news is a great reward for CEPO efforts on countering online hate through research   and initiatives such as #defyhatenow, briefing policymakers’ mobilizing civic action   to counter fake news and hate rhetoric on social media”. Yakani added.

On 26th April 2017 EYE RADIO reported that the Deputy Army spokesperson, Colonel Santo Dominic said “The security forces deployed in Juba will remain on some streets in Juba as long as what he calls ‘national security’ threat in form of social media propaganda continues to exist.”

Abuse of social media platform such as Facebook has negative impact on our society peace and stability and CEPO calls on South Sudanese Facebook and other social media users to shun abusing any of social media platform as it tantamount to abuse of freedom of expression
